Homework Arguments

If that still doesn’t work, take away privileges until the work is done. This works best with older children. Let them know that until they finish their homework, there will be no playing outside, video games, television, or whatever works best. If there is nothing for them to do, they will do their homework just so that they can go play again.

If all else fails, and the child refuses to do their homework, has tantrums, is completely defiant or otherwise, just let it go. This is an absolute last resort, because the parents are not going to be happy. When the parents return, explain to the parents what you tried, and pose it in the form of “I wanted to know what you wanted me to do next time this happens.” This way the parents don’t feel like you are criticizing, and you will know what the parents want you to do next time. They are also likely to talk to their child about their behavior, which may help the next time you sit for them.
