The Relationship Between John and Delenn

During my bowsing through e-mail messages left by fans to JMS, I found many messages about the relationship between Captain John Sheridan and Ambassador Delenn. This relationship is one of the main focal points for Babylon 5 so it cannot be taken to be a trivial aspect.

The relationship between Sheridan and Delenn is a long and perhaps bitter one, with many twists and turns that keep even a keen viewer guessing every single episode. But you can always be sure of one thing in this relationship (unlike most others): their love for each other will not fracture no matter what comes between them. Also, what makes this a unique romantic relationship among sci fi shows is that it progresses very slowly at first, then speeds up during the middle stages (where their first kiss took place - or was it their second kiss, no one could tell). They spend some time apart, but even then their love does not diminish and still goes strong some seventeen years later.

Their relationship with each other can be traced back to the beginning of the second season when Captain John Sheridan first took command of Babylon 5. From that moment on, they built a solid and trusting friendship all the while dropping subtle hints of a growing romantic interest. It was not until the middle of the third season that they finally revealed their feelings for one another. One reason for this delay is the the fact that Sheridan was still in love with his former wife, Anna Sheridan, and it took some time for him to come to terms with her death.

Their first kiss was a very unusual one, which I will explain fully later. Their very strong love was clearly demonstrated at the end of the third season when John Sheridan went to Z'Ha'Dum (Homeworld of the Shadows) and died. Delenn was so stricken with grief she refused to eat, and spent days and nights praying he would come back alive. If he was dead, it seemed she would join him as well.

Now, back to the kiss. His first kiss with Delenn was when he jumped forward in time in War Without End Part 2. He kissed a much older Delenn. The first time Delenn kissed Sheridan was when she kissed him on the White Star in The Rock Cried Out No Hiding Place, the second time for John, but the first for Delenn. Go figure that one out!
