While looking through old episodes of season 3, a pattern in the plot
line had developed that reminded me of something I had read about in a novel
once, and as I watched on it became clearer which novel it was: Lord of the Rings.
Searching through the Internet and looking at the novels themselves, I unravelled what seems to be some very close resemblance between the plot points and charactors on Babylon 5, Season 3, and Lord of the Rings. Some of the plot lines are so strikingly similiar that you could think they were mirror images of each other. I consulted a friend who had more experience with the Lord of the Rings novels. What he told me confirmed my unmistaken sense of deja vu that all these charactors and plot lines have been done before by someone else - naturally my first reaction was disappointment that JMS (J. Michael. Strasynski), who created and wrote this great show, was just copying someone else's work. But in any case I decided to do a little investigating. One of the first remarkable similarities I came across while watching War Without End Parts 1 and 2 was the mention of the One - who came in three incarnations: the one who was, the one who is, and the one who will be. The same applies to Lord of the Rings which has the one who returned, the one who is returning and the one who will return. Now it may be just a coincidence but such similarities rarely happen - that is almost a complete mirror image between the show and the book. Another similarity is of the character of Captain John Sheridan in Babylon 5 who travels to Z'Ha'Dum and dies falling down a deep cavern but is then brought back to life by one of the first ones called Lorien. This same thing also happens in Lord of the Rings. Although not exactly the same, it is surprisingly similiar in terms of what happened and especially the names of the places. Gandalf dies after falling in a deep cavern in Khaza'Dum, and he is restored in the forest of Lorien by the decendants of the first ones. Now all these similarities are just too accurate to be coincidences. And if you think the coinicidences end here, you're wrong - there's more. One of the villans on Babylon 5, a dark man named Mr. Morden, was touched and now controlled by the Shadows. In the Lord of the Rings, there is a dark place called Mordor. Go To Page: 1 2
