The Great Machine of Epsilon 3

Epsilon 3 is one of the more obscure and least mentioned places in Babylon 5, But it is one of the more important places in the show and crucial to the plot.

The great machine in Epsilon 3 was created about 800 years ago by a group of advanced aliens that populated the planet at that time. This machine is extremely powerful and controls the "behaviour" of the entire planet. This machine can also see through space and time to places far away and yet unknown. Not only can it see through time, the machine has the capability of creating time travel. Central to the operation of this machine is a being that is connected up to the central core of the great machine permanently this person is called the caretaker.

The consciousness of the being is then transferred to the machine and it more or less controls its operations. In addition the great machine also has a very powerful planetary defence system that can tackle fleets of ships. In late 2258 the last caretaker of the great machine died and was replaced by a Minbari named Draal. Anyone who is hooked up to the great machine can have their lifetime extended a lot longer than their original lifespan.

The great machine is still functioning even after the destruction of the last of the Babylon stations - watching and waiting.
