The Minbari Society

Mysterious, benign, and deadly serious - a culture wrapped deep in tradition - this perfectly describes the nature of the Minbari Federation.

Yes, this week we will be discussing the Minbari society and culture as a whole. First of all, the Minbari Government is lead by the Grey Council which controls the entire Minbari society is represented by members of each caste (only a chosen few will ever have the honour of representing their caste) - the worker, warrior and religious castes. The Grey Council rules in space aboard the war cruiser Valen'Tha in order not to show any preference to any particular area on Minbar, so to preserve its independence, thus free of any influences. Much of the day to day work is done by the worker caste, their administrators and technicians devote their entire lives towards the service of the Minbari people. Political ambition is very rare among the Minbari as serving the needs of the whole is more important than one's indulgences.

The Minbari government has undergone a massive change recently, with the beginning of the shadow war. Delenn dissolved the Grey Council which then threw open the rift between the religious and warrior castes. These strains recently broke out into open warfare between them. It took a mighty effort from Delenn - leader of the religious caste to end the war and establish a new Grey Council - which unlike the old one (consisting of equal representation from each of the 3 castes) is now weighed in favour of the worker caste - with 5 members while the others have 2 each.

The Minbari have 3 castes to which all Minbari belong to, they are the warrior caste - which is responsible for the well being of the Minbari people. The religious caste - which is responsible for the spiritual and academic training of is people. The worker caste - which is responsible for the general maintenance of the physical infrastructure of the society. Each caste maintains its own internal governance and is only answerable to the Grey Council, this helps maintain the independence of each caste while the Grey Council holds them together.

In addition to a caste each Minbari also belongs to a clan. There are 5 major clans, each has a different purpose within the society, the major clans are: The Wind Swords, The Star Riders, The Night Walkers, The Fire Wings and the Moon Shields. The Wind swords are the most militant and most belong to the warrior caste. The Star Riders most enjoy the exploration of the stars through their star ships.
