Organic Technology

This week we will be looking at the organic technology that is utilised in the ships belonging to both the Vorlons and the Shadows. We will examine its capabilities and its weaknesses associated with its use.

Firstly, only the first ones have "discovered" this kind of technology by themselves. Although younger races might have semi-integrated the technology into their own ships, they relied on information given to them by either the Vorlons or Shadows. Organic technology is the process of creating and using special organic substances to construct ships. This substance is completely self-reliant and can survive the rigors of space. Some ships using organic technology are said to be self-aware, and able to function without any crew to control them. Thus you could say they are a independent species of lifeform.

A unique life form, it is one of few organic life forms able to function and survive in space. Their sentience also gives these organic based ships an edge in combat over their crew-controlled counterparts in that they will be able to act and react faster than any crew on board conventional non-organic ships. This makes them extremely formidable opponents in combat. There seems to be no apparent openings or ports to which crews or objects could pass in and out through the organic skin. Like human skin, the organic skin can regenerate itself when it has taken damage, so there is no need for repair crews or the like. This is one major advantage in combat in that a damaged ship could repair itself (even during battle) and be fully functional in a short time after it had been damaged (no need to return home for repairs).

Organics can take an enormous amount of punishment from enemy fire:

1. They can disperse the energy of an incoming shot, leaving only the physical impact.

2. They take hits as pain (just like humans) and they have a high threshold for pain - but once that threshold has been exceeded the ship just self-destructs under the stress and pain.

So, that is a brief run down on what organic technology is and what it can do. Any race that is equipped with this kind of technology is sure to be a force to be reckoned with.
