More on Soul Hunter

To continue a bit from the last article, I was struck by some of the different viewpoints of the characters on the show about the idea of the soul. Stephen Franklin definitely did not believe in the idea of the soul. He said to Sinclair "that what the soul hunter is saying is truly impossible--that, with enough technology, a person's thoughts could be saved, but that the idea of taking someone's "soul" is not possible."

I think Sinclair is intrigued by the idea of the viewpoints of those around him and truly wishes to understand everything. He wishes to understand the race of soul hunters, the animosity Delenn has towards them, the ideas others have about souls. And even form his own opinion about the soul. I do not think he has an opinion yet.

Delenn clearly knows who they are and despises them. She even attempts to kill him. In her religion, Minbari souls are reincarnated into other Minbari. When a Soul Hunter takes a Minbari soul, there is less for the next generation. She even asks him where his collection is and he replies "My children are safe." Delenn goes on to say that "before the soul hunter leaves the station, she will find and release the souls in his collection--to free them once are for all." And the soul hunter does not take this seriously. He says that if she does such a thing she will actually be killing them.

I see this as a classic conflict in religion, much like we have on Earth today. Each side believes that they are right, and they are firm in their beliefs. They are culturally ingrained. And neither side can come to terms with the other. We saw this when Delenn's first action was to try and kill the Soul Hunter. She even said to Sinclair, "You don't know these things as I do," replies Delenn, who explains that all Minbari are taught to be afraid of the soul hunters. So even from an early age, the Minbari are taught to fear another race, not to tolerate, but to fear. How many times does that happen here on Earth? More times than I care to count. It's very discouraging. So, here is this race, which we think as very enlightened and evolved, yet we start to see a flaw in this episode. We start to see that yes, they are not perfect, just as we humans are not perfect.
