I was always drawn to the episode "Grey 17 is Missing." Not only has JMS woven two distinct yet related storylines together, but also he has managed to show us a very important point about Minbari, about religious faith, and let us draw our own conclusions to our faiths.
Delenn is to become Ranger One, to take the place of Jeffrey Sinclair. This means she will lead the Rangers in the fight against the Shadows. But she is of the Religious caste, and the Rangers are traditionally warriors. Also, this brings the Rangers out into the open. Neroon finds out and he is furious. He does confront her and I love his quote "Three Castes, Worker, Religious, Warrior. They build, you pray. WE fight!" What is more dangerous about this confrontation though, is his threat to stop her, by any means, and Lennier hears this when he steps into the room and interrupts them. They take the phrase "by any means" to also include death. No Minbari has killed another Minbari in over one thousand years. Delenn swears Lennier to secrecy, in that he will not tell Sheridan What he can do, though, is go to someone else, and not break his promise. So, he goes to Marcus. Lennier has a pretty good idea of where Neroon will show up, so he tells Marcus, and Marcus is waiting for him. Neroon knows that Marcus is a Ranger, because he wears the clothes, the pin, and carries the special weapon. He says that he just wants Delenn, but Marcus says no - he is asserting that if Delenn is Ranger One, then whatever problem there is facing Ranger One also concerns him. He says "Then it is also with me. {our quarrel}" Marcus is determined to fight to the death Denn-Shar- I believe both to defend Delenn because Neroon is a renowned warrior and to give the more time. But Marcus is losing badly. He keeps fighting and does not give up, won't give up. He does not stop, even when it is clear that he will die. Neroon offers him one last chance to stop - he cannot, as a Minbari, but Marcus, as a human, can. Marcus refuses to stop. Refuse to back away from his faith, from his cause, from his promise, from his chance to save Delenn, from any chance he might have to prove his worth in this galaxy. So Neroon asks his why he will not give up. Marcus says: "For Delenn. We live for the One and we would die for the One." Go To Page: 1 2
