AutoCAD Viruses

Virus ALERT!
There may be a new virus in town with your name on it. About 10 days ago a new virus was discovered called ACAD.Star. While this virus is not "in the wilds" yet, it is a first generation VBA virus specifically aimed at AutoCAD. One of the main reasons MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.) are frequently attacked with viruses is because they have been opened up to outside programs that use Visual Basic for Applications. While this makes them far more robust, it also sets up the ability for a virus to enter the program. Now that AutoCAD is shipping with VBA it is only a matter of time from this first baby virus to a full-blown destructive monster in all our lives. Interestingly enough nothing of this is mentioned on either the Symantec or Autodesk web site that I can find.

Repeating Commands
If you are looking for a way to do multiple commands over a series of drawings but don't want to spend the time opening, adjusting then saving each drawing you might want to take a look at ScriptMan2000. Consider if you have a set of prototype drawings that need to be updated; new title block, different font, changed dimension style, converting them from r14 to A2k, etc. you can use this to do it on one of them then have ScriptMan2000 record a script of your steps and proceed to perform it on all the drawings in the folder. You can also use it to plot a whole series of drawings from a single folder as well. How long would it take you to plot out a set of 40 drawings?

Move it Accurender!
For those of you who use Accurender and are envious of some of the animation found in Max and Viz, take a moment to look at coMOTION. This adds camera movement, animated decals, network rendering, advanced sun studies, animated backgrouds (ever want the sky to fade from blue to orange to dark?) Make sure you check out the download page. They've included various plug-ins and how-to's on it.

Change Previous
When using AutoCAD 2000 you might find the lack of abiolity to easily perform a Change Pervious annoying, frustrating or even something more vocal. The best way I've found so far is a LISP routine that was featured in the July 24th mailing of the IACTips from Element K. Now, while many of the tips that they tell you about are only partly correct or have problems, I've found that this one works quite well. Simply add the following lines to your ACAD2000doc.lsp file in the support directory and you're set to go.
