New Toys for Architects

Every year at this time there is a mega computer show held in San Francisco called Seybold. Here you can find all the latest advances in technology for the Desktop Publishing (DTP), Computer Graphic Arts (CG), Page Layout, or anything for creating a pretty picture on your computer. As usual yours truly was there to scope out all the cool new toys.

Now, some of you might ask, what does DTP have to do with me? Well, if you simply drafting up 2D house plans, probably not much, but did you visit the site? Did you take a couple of pictures of the site? How much did that roll of film cost to develop at the local 1-hour developer?

If you took along that handy dandy camera that takes real film, then you might have been interested in viewing the new digital cameras from Epson. They can take a picture while recording your voice for taking notes as you shoot. If you can hook the camera up directly to the computer via the new fast USB to upload the pictures in about 3 seconds per hi-res picture. Also you can hook it up to a TV and do a slide show or you can hook it up to a VCR and record the pictures. Next, flip a switch while hooked up to the TV or VCR and it stops taking single pictures and becomes a camcorder!

If you want to see some samples of what these cameras can do, check out http://www.epson.com/cam_scan/cameras/ga... The images this thing takes are so good, when printed out to their printers it was hard to tell the difference between it and a real photo! Now, there is hardly an architects' office that doesn't have a camera that could benefit from having something like this in field. When you get back to the office, simply plug it in, it has rechargeable batteries that automatically will recharge and if you run out of "film" or in this case RAM on the card, simply pull out the card and put in another one. And the best part, it comes with a 1.8" color LCD display so you can view each shot and be sure you got the correct image before you leave the site. On Epsons' web site at http://www.epson.com/cam_scan/ they list several of the digital cameras they have out, but the latest one called the 850Z is yet to be shown there. The problem is many of the items you see at Seybold are being shown for the very first time to the public, and it might take a few days for everything to incorporate the new products.
