Aliases, Colors and Automatic Saves

Savetime:

The time to check when the last backup was made is not right after your computer crashes. Instead when opening a new drawing type in Savetime and setup the time between each automatic save. If you are like me, you simply include it in your ACAD.LSP file so you don't have to worry about it. The saves can be found in your Windows Temp folder in most cases. They are called auto#.sv$. If you have only one copy of ACAD open, then the # will be omitted. If you have multiple copies of ACAD running, then the # sign will be 1, 2, 3, etc with a new number for each copy of ACAD currently running. Note however that the Autosave will only work in the current drawing. In order for the Autosave to function in the other drawings, you must switch over to them after the save time has expired. After your first command it will automatically update your Autosave file. This can be dangerous if you have several drawings open at once, and you are working on all of them without saving before switching between ACAD's. In the event of a crash, you would loose the work done since your last save in the non-current ACAD's. This can be avoided by simply saving before you switch between drawings. You should set your save time to an amount that you feel is ok to loose in terms of both work and money. I normally set mine to around 15 minutes, unless the drawing is very large, such as over 5 Megs, or you are working on a slow machine with slow disc access times. In case of a crash, simply rename the auto#.sv$ to auto#.dwg and you can now open it in ACAD, rename it and save it to another folder.
