After a hiatus of four months, several schedule changes and cancellations, the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) resumes racing at the Third Annual X-Factor Grand Prix of Sonoma at California's Sears Point Raceway on Sunday, 22, 2001. The X-Factor is a new line of prepaid cellular phone products and pre-paid phone cards that are being launched in the San Francisco area in conjunction with the event.

The Loss of Australia and Mont-Tremblant as venues was very disappointing for Don Panoz, founder and owner of ALMS, but the race enthusiast has pressed forward to create what will prove to be the most exciting ALMS season ever. Seven more races at Portland, Mosport, Mid-Ohio, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta will follow in the next few months, ending with the season finale at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October.

The X-Factor Grand Prix will re-launch 2001 ALMS competition which has been idle since the opening race at Texas Motor Speedway and Superflo 12 Hours at Sebring in March. Some of ALMS regulars chose to travel to Europe to compete in the European LeMans Series at Donington, Jarama, and Estoril as well as in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This is Round 3 of 9 in the 2001 ALMS schedule.

Entrants at Sears Point will include the Audi Sport North America group that took the top two finishing positions last month at Le Mans, as well as Corvette Racing, winner of the GTS class in France. Among the drivers will be Ron Fellows and Boris Said, who competed in last month's NASCAR Winston Cup race at the raceway. Sears Point Raceway has hosted a race for the American Le Mans Series every year since the formation of the series in 1999.

As part of the Grand Prix of Sonoma festivities, six American Le Mans Series cars will drive across San Francisco's famous landmark in the "Buckle-Up Drive Across the Golden Gate Bridge" on Wednesday, July 18. The drive is intended to raise awareness of the importance of seat belt use while driving a motor vehicle. "I think this will be one of the most exciting moments of my life," said Hans Stuck, the legendary European endurance racer who competes in the ALMS for BMW Team PTG. "I've driven Formula One cars at many of the world's circuits, but to drive a race car across one of the most famous bridges in the world is something I can't describe. My heart is beating faster now just thinking about it. I am proud for myself and BMW."
