Perhaps Dale earnhardt was one of the most famous race drivers ever known. And, even though he was NASCAR's man, he had recently endeared himself to fans of endurance racing when he joined the Corvette Team at the Rolex 24 Hours only two weeks before he died on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

Team Corvette expressed extreme sorrow at losing what they described as a new friend. So many good feelings had built up during that last race time.

Veteran endurance car drivers like Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins Ron Fellows, Chris Kneifel, Franck Freon and Johnny O'Connell were most impressed by the humility that was displayed as Earnhardt, Sr. acknowleged his lack of experience in this new kind of racing. A crossover had occurred and fans were hoping for more. Earnhardt said it was the most fun he had had racing in a long time.

Sadly, as millions watched Dale, Jr and Michael Waltrip cross the finish line, just a few feet away, # 3 slammed into the wall and the much awaited laep from the vehicle and wave of "I'm okay" never came.

Racing has lost an icon. A family has lost a husband and Dad.

Godspeed, Dale
