In what seems to be a very ironic turn of events, Bob Wolleck of France, one of the most experienced Porsche drivers in the endurance racing industry, lost his life on Highway 98 in Sebring, Florida a day before the 49th running of the Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring. Wolleck had gone outside the track area to persue his training in his favorite manner. He was an avid bicycle rider. Unfortunately, the driver of a motorhome did not see the man at the side of the road and he hit him. Followed so closely on the heels of the death of racing great, Dale Earnhardt, who himself had competed in endurance racing at Daytona, racing crews and people behind the scenes reflected on the nature of racing and some said "If you stay around long enough, you'll lose friends, it's just racing. The shocking thing seemed to be that Wolleck did not die on the track, in a car. Although the competition will go on, the team at Joest Racing pulled the entry. Wolleck leaves behind a wife, Michelle.
