The Women¹s Global GT Series (WGGT) is the brainchild of Don Panoz and Lyn St. James, who is serving as executive director of the organization. The idea behind the league, which is in its second year, is simple. It gives women drivers a much-needed venue in which to compete and allows fans to see the most talented female drivers on a level playing field. All compete in equally prepared Panoz Esperante sedans provided by the Panoz Racing School at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga.
As in the 1999 inaugural season of the first professional women's auto racing series in North America, 2000 will feature six races lasting 45 minutes each. The WGGT series is a support event to the American Lemans Series and competitions take place at the weekends of a major ALMS event. Coming out of WGGT victory at the third event in the second year of the series, Cindi Lux of Aloha, Ore., hopes to continue her winning streak. The defending series champion took command from the pole position and led every lap to capture the Women's Global GT Series race at Sears Point Raceway, July 23. "This is the place where I won last year," Lux said, before the start of the Sears Point race. " Davina and I raced against each other at Sears Point for the first time, starting our season-long battle which has continued since," Lux added. "Off the track, she and I are best friends, but on the track, we are enemies fighting for the checkered flag. I look forward to continuing that fight this weekend and in the future." That victory at Sears Point last year set the tone for 1999 Champion Lux amassed five podium finishes in six races en route to the inaugural WGGTS championship. Starting third in last year's race, Lux gained one position by the end of lap one, and took the lead on the second circuit of the 2.52-mile road course. She led for 14 laps, as she and second place contender Davina Galica, of Sebring, Fla., tried to run away with the event. The two made contact on lap 16, which allowed Galica to take the lead. Four laps later Lux re-took the lead and drove to victory. This year, Lux took advantage of a second-place battle between Galica and Sonja Bayer of Germany to post a 13.439-second triumph over Galica, who emerged in the runner-up spot. It was Lux's second victory in the series over its first 1 ½ seasons, the other coming at Sears Point in 1999. Only Galica, who has won three races, has more victories.
