The Audis were just too fast, around 3:41 / 3:42 at first then, under 3:40, and no one else could catch them. But despite the loss, Mario's gloves were auctioned, and the proceeds donated to Jim Martyn to help pay his medical expenses. Driving flat out for twenty-four hours, part of which is night driving on a course such as at Le Mans, creates a sense of excitement that no other racing event seems to generate. The spectacular at Le Mans is the inspiration behind the American Le Mans series and the Panoz driven organization. Don Panoz wants to provide the American Sportscar fan with the kind of racing that has pretty much be confined to Europe. To him, a race is the culmination of an entertainment event that is open to the whole family.
