May has been an exciting month for Road Racing Enthusiasts as Homestead-Miami Speedway Raceway Hosted Grand Am Nextel 250, May 5-6, ALMS raced at Sliverstone in England, May 11-13 and Grand-Am will compete at Lime Rock, May 26-28. Fans will be able to see premier race teams competing in two series at the height of the 2000 schedule as inaugural races and old favorites are celebrated by both sanctioning bodies.
This dual schedule is similar to what happened a few years ago with Indy Cars and CART. What makes it somewhat hard for fans to follow is that some cars and teams compete in all the races, some only in one league and yet others pick and choose according to venue. But it also offers double the amount of races, which makes the fan the winner, after all. Didier Theys and Mauro Baldi in the Doran Lista Ferrari Judd took first place at the Grand-Am Nextel 250 after actually being the team that loaned an engine to the winners of the Pheonix 200 a few weeks ago. Robinson and Hoerr of Informix had hoped to make it two in a row but they settled for coming in second. Florida teams such as Alex Job and Spirit of Daytona also ran. Spirit took pole position in AGT class and 13th overall in the field to start but problems caused the car to not finish the race. This was disappointing coming off their win in Phoenix. South Florida is full of sportscar racing enthusiasts who feel that the Grand-Am series will give road racing a real boost in the arm and revive sportscar racing in the area. May 5-7 was the time for the inaugural race at Homestead-Miami track and the Nextel 250 was the first professional road race run at that track. It was round three of Grand Am and produced yet another winner at the podium. The Homestead race will be broadcast in its entirety by Speedvision on tape Saturday, May 20 at 8PM and Sunday May 21, 12:00. The 2.4 mile track has eleven turns built in and it is truly a challenging track. The Grand-Am schedule continues with two more races back-to-back. May 26-28 at Lime Rock followed by the first weekend in June at Mid-Ohio. While all this is happening at Grand Am, the ALMS geared up for two races in Europe and the premier race in France at the 24 Hours of LeMans. It is a year of inaugural races as ALMS adds Silverstone , Nurenburgring and Adelaide to its competition. It is truly an international series with drivers from about 14 countries being featured.
