I'm Excited

I'm excited about the maiden V8 Supercar win for driver Paul Morris and the Big Kev racing team. Most fans were happy to see someone other than the "usual suspects" standing on the podium; Aussies love to see an underdog do well.

The HRT domination of recent years looks to be over and Paul's win shows that even regular midfield runners can have a win on their day.

Big Kev himself was there at the track to share in the team's post race celebrations. Paul did it properly, the win wasn't inherited, or the result of a gamble on tyres in uncertain weather conditions. He qualified well, third place, and very importantly at Calder made excellent starts in all three sprint races. He had the speed to hold his position during the races and the nerve not to make a mistake under constant pressure from behind, particularly in the last race, with the Enforcer literally on his bumper the whole way.

The knives are out for the Calder Park venue with the suggestion that four Shell Series rounds in Victoria are too many. AVESCO's plan looks to be to cut this round to make room for expansion overseas to somewhere in Asia. The feeling is that the series has outgrown the track that is too tight and twisty for a full field of thirty-two V8's

A series of corners after the main straight it is a recipe for disaster on the first lap as this section is very much a one lane track, with all the cars still side by side from the start.

Mark Skaife came out on top in the one lap shoot out for pole, unfortunately in race one he blew the start and his cool after Steven Johnson beat him off the line. Skaife locked up his front brakes going into the first turn and used the back of the Shell Helix Falcon as a brake, creating a gap that Skaife used to go into the lead. This lasted until the black flag came out for the illegal pass, the stop go penalty dropping him to the rear of the tightly bunched field.

Because it is almost impossible to pass at Calder unless there is a significant performance difference between cars the racing was processional. The main place to make up positions is at the start and Paul Morris made an excellent start to heat two from the outside of the front row. Again the pole sitter, this time Steven Johnson, made a poor start
