The Australian V8 Supercar circus strutted their stuff on the same Shanghai circuit that recently hosted F1 and Moto GP and underline their claim to be the best touring car series in the world.
President of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), Mr Colin Osborne said that "This event marks a significant step for Australian motor sport. The sport in China is expanding rapidly and probably represents the largest future motor sport market in the world. " The entire field and all their equipment were airlifted to Shanghai in two jumbo jets. This required custom made racking systems for the cars, with each car piled one on top of the other in sets of two, while large cargo containers were used for the equipment. The airfreight bill alone, including specially constructed racks and containers is in excess of $1,000,000. The V8 Supercars used only part of the circuit used for the Chinese Formula 1 and MotoGP events that measures 4.6-kilometres compared to the full version's 5.4-kilometres lap Holden Racing Team driver Todd Kelly said the track is "completely different to anything we've ever raced in Australia". "The nature and style of the place is completely different," he said. "We've been looking at these long straights and fast, sweeping corners that turn back on themselves, and trying to find comparable sections of track in Australia so we can get a head-start on setting up the car. We can't find too many! Kelly was in the same boat as everybody else in not knowing anything about the track. Kelly and his engineers managed to find a competitive set up for his Commodore that took him to two race wins and a third in the final race to end a dry spell for Kelly. "It's pretty special, it has been a long while (Darwin, Round 4, 2004) since I won a round. It's pretty special to do it at a place like this, our first ever round in China. At the same time, for it to be the Holden Racing Team's 50th round win is special, it makes it a very special weekend. I'm very proud to have done it for the guys," said Kelly. Steven Richards was second in the shoot out and in every race securing good championships with his consistency and of course he finished in second place overall for the round. This moved Richards up in the championship points, to where else but second place of course.
