Sometimes a garden can be quite inspirationalWe are well into the month of December and as it has been a very dry year it doesn't look as though we are going to be planting many plants. That leads me to the point that a walk in the garden does not always mean I put anything into the ground. Many times I just take a look and produce some words similar to the poems below. Not that they are the best, but were produced after a walk in the garden and a return to where I am now sitting - typing these words. Thoughts Thoughts - wispy ethereal things, Spinning away. Floating on the breeze like pieces of thistledown, Then, wisp by wisp, They spin back into consciousness again. So sorry I forgot about you, But I didn't really. You were always there - in my subconscious. John A Bottomley June 2000 The second one is based on what happened after we planted a lot of native trees, the birds never stop singing. BIRDS They sing - thro' most the night, And sometimes awaken me. But, I don't mind the kookaburras' laugh, Nor abhor the magpies' smooth soft call. It's just another night before A day! Who needs sleep. John A Bottomley June 2000 And then there was this one, which comes from a walk and a few thoughts after September 11, 2001. I did think that I would reserve a space for a memorial garden to the people who were in those twin towers at the time. It will have to wait until the weather changes later in 2002 when we finally get a drop of rain. Silence is All Around Can you hear the silence? Have you heard the quiet? Of sea shells on a shore And waves reversing from a beach where tide has turned A bit like silence after thunder, A space bereft of sound, The child cries, a mother's touch, So quiet now. Wind through trees and forests blows Then stays its screeching howl, A shell whines, as shells oft do, till Target is in reach. A mist of quiet and then the crash, Of unrelenting sound. A world of change Forever It must be like this - if we but knew What silence really is? They must have heard the quiet there, At Ground Zero, when they fell. John A Bottomley December 17 2001. The type of garden I have always wanted is nearly there. We just need to lay a few more pavers around the front and the side of the house. I have been trying to find some paving bricks the same colour as the house bricks. It's difficult the brickyards do not make that colour anymore. However, in time I hope to be able to find some in the trade papers.
