September has not been without rain in Western Australia

Citrus trees first arrived in Australia in 1788, when some of the first settlers and Captain Philip arrived with instructions to bring plants and seeds. On the way he bought oranges limes and lemons from Rio de Janeiro. Since that time the citrus has become one of the most prized plants and Australia has added to the original varieties by importation and its own development. Grapevines are now breaking their dormancy and 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of NPK will encourage strong cane development. I am looking forward to a few grapes off the vines this year; last year we didn't have much luck, I suppose mainly because we transplanted the original canes. I have been in touch with some environmental organisations around the Perth area and they seemed pleased I was writing a gardening column about gardening and the environment around Western Australia on the net - especially with such a wonderful organisation as Suite101.com
