Men of the Trees and the Gardening ProcessThere are specific rules that are to be followed to be able to grow, from seed, the trees that will help reduce the salinity. The procedure is laid out quite simply and as the farmer buys the seedlings it is only a matter of providing a bench, cover and water for the seedlings. The area I require is approximately 2 metres by 2 metres (3feet by 3 feet). I will also require some sort of apparatus for the seedlings to grow on which must be up off the ground to prevent fungus and bacteria gaining entrance to the soil in the pots of seedlings. Obviously the species grown will be native Western Australian plants, I will be growing such plants as Hakea, native wisteria, melaleucas, wattles, banksias, and many varieties of gums, mallee, bottlebrush, etc. In the early days of Men of the Trees each member took a solemn promise to serve the principles of planting and caring for trees in order to save their land from turning into desert. Each kept the promise, and the secret password TWAHAMWE meaning "we are all one". Each member dedicated his days to raising seedlings and to planting them out to make new forests to protect their homelands. So, from the highlands of Kenya has come a practice that may help to stop devastation caused by salinity in Western Australia.
