A Daisy or Two

The Shasti daisy is a popular cultivated member of the chrysanthemum group. It was developed by the famous American horticulturalist Luther Burbank. It is a large sturdy plant that grows over 1 metre tall, with blossoms that measure as much as 10 centimetres across.

There is of course the well known old song "Daisy Bell" written and composed many years ago by Harry Dacre. "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do! I'm half crazy all for the love of you!" Wonderful words, if you like old songs that is. Which brings me back to one of my favourite themes; how amazing how many flowers become themes for songs, or vice versa - roses, daffodils, and the like. But there is also a story about daisies, which is here I came in.

Happy New Year to all readers of Australian Gardening. The copyright of Daisy Bell is still held by Francis, Day & Hunter.
