Long Term GoalsWhile the idea of home educating younger children is acceptable to a lot of the general public, keeping teenagers away from 'the system' is often met with confusion or negativity. People often ask me about our family’s educational goals in the long term. Will the children go to secondary school? Will they obtain their junior or senior certificates? Our children are at the beginning of their home based learning journeys. We can’t tell what the next few years before high school will bring. I think the children’s secondary education options will be clearer to all of us as the years pass. I am aware of many of the options for secondary students to learn about things in which they are interested. There are community college courses, Open Learning (distance) courses, on-line courses, independent study, part-time work, traineeships and apprenticeships and even school if they so choose. Our main goals are for our children to have good literacy, numeracy and thinking skills. For them to know themselves and their strengths. To know and share with a broad cross-section of our community. To develop research skills in order to explore topics which interest them. To find passions and let these lead them on journeys of learning. To organise themselves – their time, their learning, their finances and so on. To choose goals which are important to them. To choose methods and formats of learning which best suit them. We have no certificates in mind. We simply aim to enjoy these early years of learning at home. We have seen many teens successfully undertake home learning journeys, achieve certification among other things, and develop into well-rounded individuals. I can only hope our family will enjoy such success with home based learning and value each day for what it provides.
