Great Ocean Road - Part Three - Return to Geelong. The next town we will visit is Colac November is the best time of year to visit Colac as it is the Go Colac, Go Country Festival, which incorporates the Colac Ferret Cup. A feature event NOT to be missed! Colac is sited on the banks of Lake Colac and in the shadow of the majestic Otway Ranges. The first land here was sold in November 1848. Colac actually started life in 1837 as a squatter's holding. Squatter is the name given to Australian sheep farmers. Although it is a term not much used these days. The original squatters were sheep farmers who literally squatted on rich pastoral land (took possession) until they were eventually grated land rights to it. Colac is also the home of the Polwarth Sheep. This breed of sheep has a very high quality fleece and a good carcass. They were originally bred just out of Colac in the 1880's and were officially recognized as a breed in 1919. They are three quarters Merino and one - quarter Lincoln. Nearby Burton's Lookout gives great views over the Gellibrand River Valley and Lake Colac. Those who are interested can take the Alan Marshall Trail, a walk of about a mile which takes you to the top of Mt. Noorat. Alan Marshall (1902 to 1984) was born in the small town of Noorat, he is the world renowned author of the autobiography, "I can jump puddles" about his experiences growing up crippled by poliomyelitis. Don't forget to check out the cheese factories where the Cheese Maker will be only too pleased to let you sample his wares, or call in to one of the local wineries. I hope you have enjoyed your tour of this beautiful section of Victoria's coast and that you will join me again next month.
