Why I Watch Football.Oh woe is me. The weekends seem to drag by. Why? Because there is no footy being played. No Friday night matches to kick start the weekend. Saturday is full of old movies that have been repeated too many times to mention. Sunday, well Sunday is full of either old movies or other sport, which is good, but it does not replace the excitement of Aussie Rules. So what do I do to occupy myself on these weekends? Firstly, I get to spend more time doing things around the house and/or in the garden. Fun, fun, fun. (I did these things during the footy season too, thank god for radio.) I can spend more time with the family, doing family things. Footy season did not stop me from spending time with my family it just enhanced it. This season, my children will be old enough to go to the local footy and we can watch the matches live, yippee!!! Going to the footy. That is great fun. Whether it is the Saturday morning under 13's playing or actually going to an AFL match. The excitement, the atmosphere, the roar of the crowd, the screaming of over-excited parents, the over-priced food and seeing the footballers close up is something that all kids should experience in sometime of their lives. Some of my fondest memories as a child consist of watching my older brother playing footy on a Saturday morning. When I was around five years old, getting out there and kicking the footy with my brother and his teammates was the highlight of my week. Being told by the team's coach that I could kick the ball better than half the team was something I will always treasure (suffice to say that after that incident, my brother would not let me join in any more). All I wanted to do was play, but back then girls were not allowed to, much to my (and some of my friends) disgust. As I got older, watching my brother play footy took on a new meaning. I discovered how good-looking a number of my brother's teammates were, and watching them play was the prime reason for going. That and my parents made me, but they did not really have to twist my arm. I had a number of crushes on various players, only to be shattered once they started bringing their girlfriends along. I think they never really got passed the fact that I used to have a better kick than them, so I never really had a chance. I, along with some of my friends, decided to move onto bigger and better footballers, the WAFL players.
