Trying to Take Notes. It’s 8:28pm and I am writing up a proposed agenda for my son’s playgroup in the spare room. I have approximately two minutes to go until the first International Rules football match starts. Admittedly, being played at the MCG and living in Western Australia means the telecast is delayed. Include the 15-minutes or so of introductions before the match means I do not have to rush. I hit the print button just as the first strains of Channel 9’s “Wide World of Sports” theme hits my ears. ‘Come on, come on.” I urge the printer. Even though I still have time up my sleeve, I want to watch the pre-match interviews. I rip out the document, turn off the computer and printer with one hand, whilst picking up my youngest son with the other. I put my son down just outside the room, hook my leg around him to prevent him from running back in as I shut the door. I put the newly printed document with the rest of my playgroup junk, grab my notebook and head into the lounge room. A perfect opportunity to take some notes and then transform them into my next article for Suite 101.com. Yeah right. “Welcome to the MCG” I hear Eddie McGuire say as Damien, my 20 month old son, grabs my shirt and tries to drag me to the fridge. I glance up at the clock and note that I have time before the game starts. I put down the notebook and pen to save my seat and get Damien a yoghurt from out of the fridge. I sit him down at the little table and chairs by the couch, settle comfortably in my seat, organise my pen and notebook, ready for some action. Billy Brownless, ex Geelong superstar and designated sideline commentator, is interviewing the Australian Coach – Garry Lyon. I try to take note of what he is saying, but Damien decides that it is better if Mummy feeds him. Once again I put down my pen and paper and hurriedly spoon feed Damien the rest of his yoghurt. By the time I’ve finished, Billy has finished his interview, and Eddie is telling us that it is time for a break. The singing of the National Anthems will be up next. ‘Great’ I thought, ‘A chance to get organised.’ I check the surroundings. Damien is still at the table, but turned so he can see my husband and eldest child, Matthew (nearly three and a half) playing Playstation games. Everybody is entertained, peace at last.
