Yes, that's well and good if you happen to follow Aussie rules, and know whom the Kangaroos, Geelong and the rest actually are. For all those who have no idea, here is a brief history lesson of all the teams in the Australian Rules Football League (AFL). As there are sixteen teams, the overview will be split over two weeks. They are listed in alphabetical order so no preferential treatment is given to any one team.

Adelaide Crows

The first South Australian team to enter the AFL way back in 1991. Since then they have won two premierships, back to back, in 1997 and 1998, under then coach Malcolm Blight. Current coach is Gary Ayres, who is commencing his second season with the Crows. They finished in eleventh spot at the end of the 2000 season with a win/loss record of nine wins and thirteen losses. The club colours are black, red and yellow and their home ground in Football Park in Adelaide.

Brisbane Lions

A team formed when a merger between the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions occurred in 1996. This was a historic occasion in Australian sporting history as it was the first time a merger has been completed in the elite sporting arena. Compromises on both sides of the merger allowed the incorporation of Fitzroy identities to be included with Brisbane's to come up with a new jumper, theme song and commence a new era for the team. They finished fifth last season, under Coach Leigh Matthews, with a thirteen/eleven win/loss record. Home games are played at the "Gabba" and the team colours are maroon, yellow and blue.

Carlton Blues

Known as "The Blues", due to their navy blue and white colours, Carlton first joined the league in 1897. Sixteen premierships have been won since then, a record number in the AFL, with their most recent being in 1995. This shows that Carlton is one of the most successful teams in the VFL/AFL history. During the 2000 season, Carlton finished third on the ladder, under Coach David Parkin, who has since announced his retirement. This season, Wayne Britton will coach Carlton. Britton was Parkin's "match day coach" during the 2000 matches. They hope to improve their placing on the ladder in the 2001 season by bettering their seventeen/eight win/loss record of the previous year.
