NINETEENTH CENTURY AUSTRALIAN WOMEN WRITERS
Most people, when they think of nineteenth century or early twentieth century Australian authors and poets, think of Henry Lawson, "Banjo" Paterson, Henry Kendall, C. J. Dennis, Marcus Clarke and Miles Franklin and Christina Stead. In other words, the authors that people think of apart from Miles Franklin and Christina Stead are male authors. Australia produced many writers in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century and a large number of these were women. Henry Lawson's own mother Louisa Lawson was a writer and early feminist. Miles Franklin, Barbara Baynton and Louisa Lawson are three women writers who were fascinating people themselves. My next article will be about these three remarkable women themselves and their work. Here is a list of many of the early Australia women writers and their works.
