That time of year....

It’s that time of year again!

Instead of enjoying the spirit of family, fun, giving, and traditions, many started the Holiday Season with a bang on November 23rd at 5 a.m. The day after Thanksgiving, the biggest SHOPPING day of the year! Whoever thought of that idea after a day of indulgence must have been crazy!

I stayed home.

When you have made a decision to “simplify” Christmas and get back to the basics, things become much easier, and cheaper. You don’t feel like you HAVE to roll out of bed at 4:30 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving, because you know you are not missing out.

Even if this is not your first “simple” Christmas, remember to warn your friends & family!! Friends & Family that indulge financially over the Holiday Season on gifts for themselves will tend to do the same for you and your children. If you are trying to teach a lesson, there is nothing more destructive than a ton of plastic, beeping, blinking, trendy, commercial toys to break the magic. So let them know, and let them know if you would rather only exchange gift for the children, do a gift drawing, etc. It will save you many months of bad vibes!

Unless you live on the North Pole, your children will have been inundated with Holiday Cheer since before Halloween. It is very hard to explain to a Toddler why Santa is sitting in the Mall before Thanksgiving. Doesn’t he have things to do? You can either avoid stores, malls, etc after Oct. 15th, or get very creative about explaining. Of course our little angels are viewed as major consumers during this season, and are bombarded with “wishes” and must haves.

Here is a little tradition I started this year with my four-year old. Every time she says, “Momma, can I have that? Momma, can I ask Santa to bring me that? Momma, let me show you what I REALLY want!”…I tell her to put it on her list. The “list” is a big piece of poster paper, taped to her door. Here she can write, paste, color, etc all her wishes. On December 6th, Nikolaus Tag, she may pick 3 items off of this list. These are the three items we will put on the wish list we send to Santa. Only 3, since we don’t want Santa to think we are greedy, because then he may not come by at all!
