Attached Teens - Angels of the Future?

Dec 4, 1999 - © Heike Boehnke

I wonder if it is because AP parents tend to "explain" more to their children? I find, even though my daughter is still very young, that the "you make the decision" mode already works. I make her look me in the eye, and then I explain, or give her options to choose from. I have decided this is better for MY nerves and well-being, since the NO and I AM IGNORING YOU TOTALLY stamina of a two-year old is much stronger than mine! I know she understands, and now when she has something very important to tell me, she grabs my chin, looks me in the eye and says: "Look at me, Momma!" It amazes me.

I had many days growing up when I swore my mother just did not want to understand me, and that she never went through what I did when she was a teen (was she ever?). That was probably true, as evolving times and a new Millennium will bring our children trials that we can only imagine in our worst fears. Alone the violence our children are faced with today was totally unknown to me in that degree, and I grew up in the city. Then there is AIDS. Children are having sex at young ages and are being infected. And still today, you will find parents revolting when a school wants to distribute condoms. The Cyberage is also changing their world, traditional teen recreation has gone from sports and mall watching to Cypersurfing and Chatting. Parents need to be aware, and need to accommodate. We need to step back, and analyze how we will keep our children close enough to protect them, yet giving them enough space to grow and experience.

I had a great teacher, yet have a lot to learn. Power to me, and God Bless all of us Parents!
