Be a Fool

Every planet in your birth chart signifies a role that you can play in life. The key is to play those roles wisely.

One role we get to play in life probably more often than we would like is that of the fool. But sometimes being a fool is a good thing. There is such a thing as a "wise fool."

A wise fool is someone who can relax and let their inner child emerge, someone who knows that spontaneity, innocence, a sense of play, and trust in the universe are all valuable tools to guide us through life.

Where would we find this "wise fool" in a birth chart? We can start by looking at the tarot cards, where Uranus is assigned to the Fool card. This is the card that features a blissfully innocent young man about to walk off a cliff. Certainly, Uranus is the planet most likely to walk you off a cliff.

With Uranus, you must always expect the unexpected. The same is true of a wise fool's path. There is a zany side to Uranus that one would suspect exists in a wise fool. And Uranus will go ahead and do things without taking a poll first to see if the neighbors approve, just like a fool, who cares little what others think about him.

In the tarot, the fool is about to step off a cliff because he is busy looking up. Uranus, too, is a planet of lofty idealism and lives in a world of intellectual abstraction. Thus, a person who is strongly Uranian tends to be a bit hopeless at dealing with the realities of this world.

As one of the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), Uranus is often described as impersonal. These planets are believed to have more to do with collective humanity than the individual. Yet as someone who has all three of these planets strong in her chart, I do not agree. I believe these planets are a large part of what makes us truly individual. They represent the forces that teach you to access your inner wisdom.

These planets can have a very personal impact on your life by forcing you to move beyond the habitual world. In astrology, Uranus is known as the Great Awakener because it shakes you up and forces you to see things in a new way. To return to the Fool on the edge of the precipice, is there any any quicker way to "wake up" to reality than to fall off a cliff?
