Normally, I don't write about mundane astrology here. Mundane astrology studies charts of current events and relates them to the charts of other nations, other important events in the past, or the birth charts of people involved in the event to try and see where current trends are likely to take us. Like many other branches of astrology, it is a study all by itself and many astrologers specialize in this branch of astrology alone.
For instance, in discussing the attack of Sept. 11, astrologers have looked at the chart for the moment that the first plane stuck the World Trade Center. (Times for this chart vary slightly depending on what source you consult and range from 8:45 a.m. to 8:48 a.m. on Sept. 11.) This chart can be read by itself for the message it conveys about the intent of the terrorists in making this attack. It can also be read as the first moment of a war and used to track the course of that conflict from then on.
In doing this, mundane astrologers will take the Sept. 11 chart and compare it to the chart for the United States of America, the birth chart of President Bush, and the chart for Osama bin Laden and others involved in this great drama. Through these comparisons, they will get a sense of the energies involved and how they might work out in the future. They will also take the Sept. 11 chart as well as other charts and look at coming transits and progressions to predict the probable course of the battle against terrorism.
You might be asking yourself what this has to do with spiritual astrology. My answer would be that the future is not set in stone. These charts describe the great issues that lie before us as a people and as a world community as we seek the right and just way to deal with terrorism in our midst. These are questions that we all need to ponder, for our answers to these questions will determine what the 21st century will be like for us and for our children.
The overriding symbolism in these charts for our times is found in the current opposition of Saturn and Pluto. In the Sept. 11th attack, Pluto is at 12 Sagittarius opposing Saturn at 14 Gemini.
