Going beyond traditional astrology

Alice A Bailey was another influential writer in the field of esoteric astrology. Bailey wrote in the early 20th century and claimed to channel for Djwhal Khul, who in turn claimed to be a Master of the White Brotherhood. Khul said his teaching was an extension of theosophical thought. Much of the material that came through Bailey eventually formed the basis of what is now known as the New Age Movement.

How does esoteric astrology differ from more traditional astrology? Basically, its interpretation of your chart will be infused with these "ancient mystery" beliefs. More specifically, esoteric astrology employs a second set of planetary rulers in addition to the traditional astrological rulers. For example, Aries is ruled by Mars in traditional astrology. In esoteric astrology, the ruler is Mercury. When looking at your chart in a spiritual context, the esoteric astrologer would thus key in on Mercury to give light on any soul-level issues around your Aries energy.

Esoteric astrology also makes use of a complex system of interpretation based on the Seven Rays. These rays are said to be the seven basic energies that compose the universe and are themselves emanations of the God-Force or Logos. Each ray passes through specific astrological signs on its way to the earth. For example, Ray 1, the ray of Will and Power, filters through Aries, Leo and Capricorn.

The rays are: Ray 1, Will and Power; Ray 2, Love and Wisdom; Ray 3, Intelligent Activity; Ray 4, Harmony through Conflict; Ray 5, Concrete Knowledge; Ray 6, Idealism and Devotion, and Ray 7, Ceremonial Order or Magic.

Planets in esoteric astrology are seen as expressing or embodying the ray's life. Pluto and Vulcan embody Ray 1, for example.

As you can perhaps start to imagine, this whole system adds a new and incredibly complex level to astrological interpretation. An esoteric astrologer must be thoroughly familiar with this entire intertwined series of concepts in order to accurately interpret your chart on this higher level. Those who believe in esoteric astrology will tell you that humankind is evolving to the next level of existence and that these concepts reflect that awakening consciousness. As such, they will bring fresh light to your soul's journey.
