The Moon's Nodes: Points of RevelationIf you are wondering about your true path in life, you will find a wealth of knowledge through studying the north and south nodes of the moon in your chart. More, perhaps, than any other part of the chart, the nodes speak specifically about our spiritual destiny. The nodes of the moon have been known since ancient times, but only in recent years has a great deal been written about them. The nodes are not physical bodies but points. They are where the path of the moon crosses the path of the sun (the ecliptic). The north node is where the moon rises above the ecliptic on her path and the south node is where she descends below the ecliptic. These two points are directly opposite with each other. So when we discuss the nodes in a birth chart, we are once again dealing with the symbolism of an opposition. An opposition is known as the aspect of awareness because it is all about learning to balance two apparently opposing forces in our lives. This calls for a great deal of conscious intent in our choices. As we face life situations, we must become aware that we have a spectrum of possible responses from one end of the nodal opposition to the other. On the surface, these responses will appear to be quite different, but by understanding the underlying theme beneath the polarity, we can choose responses that will result in our soul's growth. In previous articles, I have talked about how each sign has its opposite: Aries/Libra; Taurus/Scorpio; Gemini/Sagittarius/ Cancer/Capricorn; Leo/Aquarius; Virgo/Pisces. Each of these polarities is searching for the same essential truth in different ways. Take Virgo and Pisces for example. Both are seeking the truth about ultimate reality. Virgo seeks it by trying to discern and analyze every detail of existence. It is searching for truth in the Many. Pisces seeks it through a desire to leave every detail behind and merge into the infinite. It is searching for truth in the One. Is one approach wrong and the other right? Should we abandon one and follow the other? On the contrary, we need both. The Many are what make up the One. And the One is the essence behind the Many. So it is with the nodes of the moon. We need to function in both our south node and our north node, for both have important contributions to make to our spiritual understanding. But we can handle them better when we understand more about what they symbolize.
