The Journey Begins

Spirituality is a word laden with almost infinite levels of meaning. No one system can encompass the vast reaches of human spirituality. But I believe astrology certainly can play its own unique part in humanity's vast search for the meaning behind this awe-inspiring universe. And in the areas where astrology does cast light on our inner nature, it can be an invaluable help.

Specifically, astrology has value because it helps us to gain self-understanding and to see others in a clearer light. Self-acceptance and compassionate insight into others are certainly two keys to a more loving world, the goal of many great religions. Astrology also reveals that there is a pattern behind all things; that there is meaning and purpose to our existence and that this meaning and purpose unfold over time.

The tool that astrology uses to gain this understanding is the birth chart. A birth chart is a picture of the sky above the earth at the moment of your birth. Because the earth is constantly turning, the sky appears to be moving. In fact, the planets are moving through space and are constantly changing in aspect -- the term astrologers use to describe their relationship to each other. In addition, because of the rotation of the earth, a different astrological degree appears at the horizon every four minutes.

What does this have to do with you? It is the reason your birth chart is unique. The earth and sky are involved in a complex and ever-changing dance. The exact configurations that appeared at the moment of your birth and are shown in your birth chart will not be seen again for another 20,000 years.

What if you happen to be a twin? Twins are fairly common --nowadays, with fertility drugs, we even have triplets, quadruplets, etc., born more and more often. Astrologers study this phenomena with great interest because the charts of two twins will be nearly identical but not quite -- it helps us to understand how even the smallest changes in a chart can make a difference in a life. Twins run in my family and in this generation I have twin great-nieces, born about four minutes apart. They have different rising degrees in their charts and several planets have changed houses from one chart to another.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Before we get into the mysteries of the birth chart and your spiritual growth, you need to have a copy of your own chart. Fortunately, with the help of the Internet, getting a birth chart is easy.
