Air Quality in ManhattanIt's no doubt that we will feel the emotional effects of the terrorist attacks of September 11 for a long time. Physical effects, especially for those with lung diseases like asthma are likely to be affected in the long term as well. At the end of this introduction, I'm going to provide a direct link to an excellent article by the American Lung Association called, "Questions & Answers About Lung Health After the World Trade Center Disaster." The article not only answers common questions regarding air quality and safety in Manhattan, but offers links to those in need of additional support. Living with asthma often means that your lungs are more sensitive to air quality than most people. While cigarette smoke, for example, is deadly and can make anyone cough, it can send an asthmatic reaching for a rescue inhaler or, worse still, heading for the emergency room. Imagine, then, the effects of tons of smoke, debris and powered cement on people suffering with asthma and other lung diseases. Even for healthy lungs, it"s a tough environment. The article by the ALA can help you deal with the air quality in NYC following the disaster, however, it can be useful in other situations, as well. Here are some situations where similar advice may be helpful: Were you or a close neighbor the victim of a house fire? Were you downwind of a camp fire or bonfire? As the weather cools, people are starting up fireplaces. Did you experience a downdraft resulting in a house full of smoke? Anytime you are exposed to smoke, your lungs may be at risk. Remember to talk with your doctor if you notice any change in your asthma symptoms and certainly before adjusting the doses of your medications or use of oxygen.
