If you have a disability and want to earn a college degree, you may be able to get for free, right in your own home. Distance education firm e.college.com is giving 100 scholarships for earning on-line degrees to worthy students. The program targets those who might not otherwise be able to earn a degree. The scholarship program is directed toward students who demonstrate one or more of the following priority characteristics:

1. Demonstrated need for online learning

2. Demonstrated Financial need

3. Individuals from Underrepresented populations

4. Previous Scholastic Aptitude

5. Individuals with Disabilities

Because most individuals with disabilities likely meet one or more of the other four requirements, this may open the door for many. Scholarship recipients will receive up to $40,000. The funds awarded will depend upon the tuition associated with the intended degree program, the need for a free computer, free text books, and free Internet service provider. So, if you or someone you know would be interested, visit e.college.com for more details and fill out an application!!

If you're not ready for an entire degree or already have one, why not try one online class, just for fun. The EdSurfPage, the Online Distance Education Learning Resource for Adult Students, lists a huge assortment of FREE online courses on just about everything from computer programming to tarot card reading. Other sources for "just for fun learning" are Virtual University and www.learn2.com.

For $7.95 per month or $69.95 per year, you can learn just about anything related to computers at Ziff Davis University - ZDU. The fee allows you to take as many instructor-led courses or self-paced tutorials as you can handle. For many courses, you have to purchase books and software, which can get expensive. Still, ZDU is much cheaper than most community college classes on the same topics.

For those wanting college credit, just in case you decide on a degree later, try searching the World Lecture Hall, The Virtual Education Database, or Distance Education Clearinghouse.

When considering fee-based on-line education options, take caution that you are dealing with reputable companies and institutions. Be sure to read distance education watchdog John Bear's pages and Mary Lord's Top 10 Signs You May Be Dealing With A Diploma Mill.

The ability of computers to bring such educational opportunities into our homes make them such powerful assistive devices!
