The third recommendation that they made was that he start school a few minutes later than the other children. He had been complaining of dizziness and headaches upon entering the school lately and I assumed this was due to escalating stress. The Autism Team straightened out that assumption by explaining that with sensory integration difficulties the child can feel physically ill when having to put up with it day after day. By bringing my son into the school just 5 minutes later, the noise level in the hallways was cut by 80% and he no longer has that dizzy, headachy feeling.
There were other recommendations that made perfect sense as well. As we left the meeting, it was with a feeling of hope, for the first time all year, that our son would make it through to June. We learned that there are practical solutions to some of our son's difficulties that can be implemented instead of what we had assumed - nothing would work because there were too many problems this year.
