Asperger Syndrome Research Projects

In the last ten years, there have been many ongoing research projects into the causes of Asperger Syndrome. Interestingly enough, a study done quite some time ago, comparing the neuropsychological profiles between children and youth with Asperger Syndrome against the neuropsychological profiles of children and youth with High Functioning Autism indicates that two areas distinguish HFA from AS. Those two areas where the children with HFA scored less than the children with AS are verbal memory and theory of the mind. The researchers concluded that lack of "Theory of the Mind" did not occur with everyone on the Autism Spectrum. Actually, I found this result to match what I had suspected with my own child. Every time I come across an article about "Theory of the Mind", it strikes me that it doesn't quite apply to someone with Asperger Syndrome. My son can put himself in my shoes at times, just not all the time, and possibly not in the way I would expect him to.

Another research project completed this winter also proved that some people with Asperger Syndrome or on the Autism Spectrum suffer from Face Blindness. I had been describing how my son doesn't seem to recognize faces for years to his pediatrician, who stated that face blindness usually occurs in people who have had a stroke or have Alzheimer's disease and he relegated my concern to the bottom of the list of difficulties. I did not realise that this is an actual neurological problem for many people until someone sent me an email about this issue pointing me in the direction of the news bulletin. You can read about it here:http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/aspe...

There have been all kinds of research into brain imaging of people with Asperger Syndrome and Autism, as well as genetic studies, the relationship of Asperger Syndrome and Tourette Syndrome, linguistic comprehension studies, and follow up studies to see how the children have progressed over the years. It seems that there are several research projects going on in different areas of the country with regards to the causes of Asperger Syndrome. In fact, there are several researchers looking for people to participate in some of these studies. Sometimes there is a small payment for participating in it.
