How to Help Your Child Become Organized.

1. Designate an area or room in the house where he can lay out his toys in complicated designs and leave them up for days at a time. For example, we have a large table in the kids playroom where my son will build complicated lego cities, or a city of blocks, etc. It is important to him that he has a place that is "his own" and no one is allowed to put the creative project away until he is done with it. I have found that my son will put the lego away when he wants to move onto a different project.

2. Laundry baskets holding toys in every room works well when the child is young. Toys brought from upstairs can be put back upstairs at the end of the day easily. We have several laundry baskets for a quick "tidy up" that are hidden behind the couch when company comes.

3. Laundry baskets or boxes with file folders, large recycled envelopes in them can help sort the paper out. My son likes to save all his paper art, and we have several boxes stored in the basement. You never know, he may resurrect an idea one day and become a famous video game maker.

4. Organize clothing into drawers or cubbyholes, matching tops, bottoms, socks and underpants. That way, the entire outfit is easy to find when needed. Children or youth with any kind of fine motor control difficulties can find hanging clothing on hangers almost impossible.

5. For larger clothing, backpacks, or helmets, large hooks are a much better alternative than a row of small hooks, or a coat rack. Make sure that the other members of your household don't hang their items on these hooks, or you will find that coat back on the floor.
