Embracing the Uniqueness

In a competitive society that drives people to achieve greatnesses amongst their peers, uniqueness and individuality are often times overlooked.

Sadly, I am just as much to blame as often times I find myself dwelling on all the negative aspects of Andy's bout with Aspergers as opposed to the positive. There are some days that I long for him to be like every other 11 year old kid with respect to sports, friendships, etc.

Then I come to my senses.

Even with all the difficult times, I wouldn't change a thing about him as his good far outweighs his less than stellar moments.

Take his compassion for instance. One would be hard pressed to find a more compassionate 11-year-old kid. Sure he's got his faltering moments (what kid doesn't?) but when it's all said and done, he genuinely cares about people in his life and how his actions directly affect said people. He's got more compassion than most adults I know.

His love for his 4 year old sister Rebecca is also above and beyond that of the norm. He would honestly do anything in the world for her if he believed it would make her happy. A perfect example was just last week when she returned from a play date with a strange liquid concoction in a sealed jar that she put together, consisting of leaves, sticks, grass, buttons, etc.

Andy took one look at the jar on the kitchen table and pushed it away in disgust, demanding to know what exactly it was. All I had to say was it was something Rebecca put together at her friends house before he instantly did an about face. Suddenly he loved it and spent the remainder of the evening gushing on and on to her about how great it really was. She's only 4 now, but one day soon I'm sure she'll really appreciate what an awesome big brother she has.

So yeah, he may throw over-the-top tantrums (some even resulting in rages), be overly sensitive and highly dramatic. He may be extremely impulsive at times and completely lost in his own world at other times. Sarcasm will almost always be lost on him and he may always be the last one to actually get a joke.

But none of that really matters in the big picture for those are all things he can overcome over the years with determination and a lot of hard work.
