Morgan Shepherd Gets "Screaming Eagle" Sponsorship

You've got to be tough to be a "Screaming Eagle", and nobody fits that description more than Morgan Shepherd, veteran NASCAR and ARCA driver who will sport the 101st Airborne insignia on the hood of his Ford Taurus for the February 11, 2001, Discount Auto Parts ARCA 200 from Daytona.

Shepherd has earned his reputation for toughness, with over 400 NASCAR Winston Cup starts and four victories. He ran his first Winston Cup race in 1970, that's right 31 years ago, and has been a regular on the circuit since 1981. He's also spent lots of time behind the wheel of the Craftsman Trucks as well as Busch Grand National and ARCA cars in his career.

Shepherd, a native of Conover, North Carolina, is known as one of the most knowledgable people in racing. An expert mechanic, it's said that he could overhaul an engine at age eleven, and that he knows the sport inside-out. He's raced against all of the legends of the sport, from "King Richard" Petty to Dale Earnhardt and just about everyone in between.

He's finished in the Top Ten in 104 races and finished as high as fifth in the overall Winston Cup points race. In ARCA competition last year, he finished 6th and 7th in the two races held at Pocono International Raceway. At age 59, he's shown that he's still a competitive force to be reckoned with.

Given a good car, which he has in the Stan Hover #80 Taurus, it's entirely possible that this crafty veteran could bring home a win at a track he's probably more familiar with than any of the current breed of ARCA driver. Daytona has always been one of his favorites, although Atlanta must rank as his favorite track, since he's won three Winston Cup races there.

ARCA fans should be looking forward to seeing the #80 at Daytona on February 11, and if history is any indication, can be pretty well assured of seeing the "Screaming Eagle" #80 still running near the front at the checkered flag. Other sponsors lending their names to his effort are Classic Scents Air Fresheners and Gulf State Sales. It's my guess that the 101st Airborne wouldn't sponsor someone who they didn't expect to be a winner, and it's a sure bet that with Morgan Shepherd behind the wheel, their expectation may just come true.
