First Time Winners Take Checkered Flag at Illinois & MinnesotaARCA (Automobile Racing Clubs of America) Update Nobody expected a little known driver from Phenix City, Alabama to walk away with the Southern Illinois 100 trophy, but that's exactly what Billy Thomas did today, as he outdistanced Frank Kimmell to the checkered flag. Thomas, driving the JW Miller Land and Timber #22 Chevrolet, picked up the lead on lap 29 and never fell back as he led 72 laps. Kimmell finished second in the race and maintained his points lead over Bob Strait who is currently 210 points behind. Tim Steele is third in the points standings this year. Both Strait and Steele did not finish the race at DuQuoin, Illinois. Strait went out on lap 93 with engine problems and Steele left on lap 79 with engine problems as well. On another note, current points leader in the Bondo/Mar-Hyde series, Frank Kimmel will try another kind of racing next weekend in Salem, as he straps himself into an ARCA Lincoln Welder Truck to run the Uhl Truck Sales 100. It's the first time Kimmell has driven a race truck, and should prove to be an interesting experience for the Jeffersonville, Indiana veteran. In case you didn't know it, ARCA has racing action for every fan. From the stock cars of the Bondo/Mar-Hyde series to the trucks of the Lincoln Welder series, to the midgets of the Auto Value series, ARCA has it all. In the future, I'll be giving you information on the other ARCA series, and bringing you the results from their races as well. I hope you'll enjoy it. ASA (American Speed Association) Update Tristan Dupuis came from 17th starting position Monday to win the annual Labor Day ASA race, the Miller Lite 300, at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. For Dupuis the victory was his first in ASA competition. Series points leader Gary St. Amant finished second. Dupuis used one less pit stop than the other drivers to his advantage in bringing the victory to his car owner, Ron Daniels. In other news from Minnesota, the future of racing at the Fairgrounds is assured for another year as an agreement for the 2001 race has been signed. It was rumored that this might be the last year for major racing at the half mile oval. The Miller Lite 300 is currently the only race held at the track. In the next ASA event, the series travels to Memphis Motorsports Park for the Memphis 200, sponsored by Jani-King. The race will be televised on TNN on Sunday, September 10, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. It is the 17th of the 20 race schedule for the 2000 ASA season.
