He was particularly impressive to his boss, famed car owner Roger Penske, who watched his driver walk away with the victory, in only his third ARCA start. It was an especially good day for Penske, as he traveled back to Bristol after the Kentucky Speedway ARCA race and watched his driver, Rusty Wallace win the goracing.com 500 in an almost identical fashion. Wallace took the Bud Pole and the checkered flag, to put two flag to flag wins under Penske's belt. Newman held off veteran champion Tim Steele in a final lap shootout. The final margin of victory was less than one second. Newman gave credit to his crew who prepared an absolutely flawless car for the race. Everything worked as planned and Newman pitted twice during the race, but only once for a set of new Hooisier's.
