Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt Harmensz van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, Netherlands, one of nine children. His brothers were all trained as craftsmen, so his parents broke that tradition by sending him to Latin school. His attention, however, quickly turned to painting, and he shortly began his instruction in painting by Jacob Issacsz van Swanenburgh and apprenticed with an Amsterdam historical artist, Pieter Lastman. In 1625, he started his own studio in Leiden along with Jan Lievens. Rembrandt found his first benefactor in Constantijn Huygens, a secretary of the city's governor, Prince Frederik.
Rembrandt received many commissions for portraits, and some of his best loved work was indeed executed in portraiture, including "The Amsterdam Merchant Nicolaes Ruts" (1631) "The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp" (1632) and "The Syndics Of The Clothesmaker's Guild" - better known perhaps as "Teh Staalmeesters" ( 1662). Rembrandt also painted countless Biblical canvases, marked by a realistic approach to the subject matter. Some of his best known Biblical works include "The Raising Of Lazarus" (1630), a series of paintings depicting the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ made between 1633 and 1639, and "Susanna And The Elders" (1655). He also painted scores of self-portraits throughout his life, as well as numerable paintings of his wife, Saskia, and his young son Titus. One of Rembrandt's most famous works is "The Militia Company Of Captain Francis Banning Cocq" or "The Nightwatch" (1642) which depicted the militia company of Captain Banning on forward march. Like his other works, the canvas is a beautifully detailed work that uses the contrasts between light and dark with masterful skill. There are the usual sites available to see Rembradt's work, such as Mark Harden's Artchive and the Web Museum, but a great site to check out is the Museum het Rembrandthius in Amsterdam in the house where he worked for twenty years that has a permanent collection of hsi etchings on line, with text available in Dutch or English. This is a beautifully designed site, and intuitive to navigate (the exhibitions scroll left to right rather then up and down). Go To Page: 1
