Robert DelaunayRobert began to paint canvases based on contemporary events such as his "Hommage a Bleroit" (1914) , honoring Louis Bleroit's flight across the English Channel . He also made works based on sports of the day , including "The Cardiff Team " (1913) , that looks almost like what we know as Pop Art. In 1918, Sonia Delaunay was commissioned to design the sets and costumes for A production of "Cleopatra" by the noted Russian choreographer Diaghilev and dancer Leonid Massine. The works of Robert and Sonia were exhibited together in Berlin in 1921. For the 1925 exhibition for the Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Robert made his large painting , "La Femme et La Tour" , which was removed at the last minute and considered "too progressive" , and Sonia opened her "boutique simultanee" and successfully sold her fashion ideas. In the 1930's the Delaunays joined the Abstraction - Creation , a Parisian group of artists. Robert also began a second series of Eiffel Tower paintings during this time, as well as his "Rythmns Without End". In 1937 , The Delaunays designed the interiors for the Palais de l'Air, which combined large structures of colored metal and paintings by the two that created a unique environment. In the late 30's Robert help found the first Salon des Realites Nouvelles , a group of abstract painters., but he was already seriously ill and dies of cancer on October 25, 1941. Sonia remained active in art and tapestry until her death in 1979. - Nick Burton
