I guess the Internet is coming together as a very powerful medium. It has enormous potential in publishing and marketing. The presentation potential is enhanced by PodCasting, Blogging, Internet Radio (which companies now can set up for minimal cost.) Articles, Web Galleries, Linkage Systems, Online Courses every business would find something to suite them on the Internet if they put the effort into it.
Advertising Networks spring up over night but often fall just as quickly. How can things go so wrong with so much technology available so easily and affordably? Over load is the obvious answer. Too many choices and perhaps too little commitment or not knowing how much commitment is needed before embarking on ventures. Because it is available and affordable artists can set up their own networks overnight with no recourse to anyone and no limit to their reach. If they know what they are doing that is. I have managed to build a fairly good system for myself but it has been a long haul. My own website became unwieldy, I took on too much work. Things were fun but time consuming. I limped along on a very steep learning curve for quite a while until finally I began to cave. What caused this not so sudden tottering you may well ask? A simple contract won over the Internet has nearly brought me to my knees this year. It was only a 12-page comic but it really took up my time and held me working long hours on material that was copy righted to someone else and not mine to publish, as I would have liked Gradually my writing schedule started to fall behind. My commitment to online communities that once were my supported and friendship base, although not lessened began not to be able to see me through, and discouragement and sometimes panic set in. It seemed not matter what I did others had the power to send me 'back to the drawing board' and hold me up for very long periods. In short I felt powerless, trapped and overwhelmed. The situation will never happen again. For the time being - I have to find a way out of the hole. Prioritising will see me through until the end of this year. Next year (and forever after) better choices and preparation of contracts and legal matters will protect me from repeating the disaster in the future. I of course will now use the services of a agent. I think I have reached the stage of never moving without one. I am a Freelancer and from now on will remain free. Go To Page: 1 2
