List The Pros Cons!

A quick web search will tell you that Lili Adriani is an artist from the Gold Coast. AU She has organised a brave venture for artists here in Queensland and some further down south. I decided to check this venture out for myself.

"What is the proposition," I asked her?

Big

"Bring your paintings on the day and be responsible for every aspect of hanging the work."
"Because of the low entrance rate for exhibitors it is all completely self serve with all responsibility resting with the artists to market and sell their work."
"All sounds a bit too good to be true," I thought quietly.
"How do you make money then?" I asked.

"My wages come from the ticket sales at the door."
"$5 per person."
"This is a good system. It means that I have to generate a flow of traffic to earn my wages. This is just what you want - isn't it?" she asked laughing.

"Yes," I thought, "Can't fault the logic of that."
All sounded good to me so I began to examine the pro and cons of the situation. Lets make a list I thought. Pros.
  • It is placed at the end of the School Holidays. (Qld) That is really good for a working teacher. It gives me two weeks to make sure that I have a fresh and innovative body of work ready. I display the exhibit on the Saturday of the last weekend.
  • The exhibition will be in time to generate sales for Christmas gift givers. I can introduce an installment plan. I have always wanted to be well prepared in advance for the Christmas gift buying season. Hmmm! May be this time I will even do it in style!
  • Low fees. $250 is a fair asking price for a high volumn of viewing traffic. One only needs to sell a painting and the costs are covered. If not the exposure is sure to drive up class sizes for the Christmas break.
  • Lili says I will be able to book two booths to accommodate size of my collection. Each booth is limited to 20 paintings.
At this point I screeched to halt
"How much room would I have to exhibit?" I asked her. I was still a bit puzzled about how a mural artist could make this system work for her.
"2.4m high, 2m wide by two panels." she replied with encouragement!
"You will like this she said," showing me a map of the area.
