Ramirez Canyon Park (Streisand Center)
Don't get your hopes up. I don't think you'll make it past the front gates of stars' homes. But perhaps there is a chance. The only superstar's home open to the public is Barbra Streisand's former estate on Ramirez Canyon Road in the hills above Malibu across from Paradise Cove.
Purchased in 1974, Barbra lived in the 22.5 lavishly landscaped acre estate for over 20 years. In 1993 Barbra donated her estate to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Today the estate serves as a 'think tank' for environmental and conservation issues to enhance ecological integrity of the area.
The delightful 90-minute tour of the estate with tea and scones on the patio is a grand opportunity to enjoy the peaceful grounds that include sycamore, oak, walnut and pine trees, quaint bridges, flowering gardens, fruit trees and flowing streams. With five houses on the property including the Barn, the Peach House, the Art Deco House, Barwood, and a Caretaker's House, there is plenty of visual stimulation. The Art Deco House became a feature story in the 1993 issue of Architectural Digest Magazine. Down a private road that crosses two streams on the way to the estate, you will also get to enjoy the wild flowers, scrub oak, and chaparral in the local mountains. The estate is open on Wednesdays and tours are given from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM with one to two months advanced reservations. With a price tag of $30.00 per person for the tour, there is a relatively long waiting list.
